ABSTRACT

COVID-19 has claimed the lives of more than 600 thousand people within half a year. As the pandemic worsens, the number of fake news online also increases. The main objective of this study is to examine online information sharing regarding COVID-19 causes and preventive actions among university students. Specifically, this study examined the perception, attitude, behavior, and online information sharing on COVID-19 causes and preventive actions among International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) students. The quantitative research design was employed in this study. The survey method was used with an online questionnaire as the research instrument for data collection. A total of 203 respondents were selected to participate in this study through the network sampling procedure. The study is guided by the social exchange theory. It was found that IIUM students had a positive level of perception, attitude, and behavior towards COVID-19 causes and preventive actions. They also had a high level of online information sharing on COVID-19 causes and preventive actions. The majority of the students shared information about COVID-19 causes and preventive actions with peers through social media. Due to the high level of online information sharing, almost all of IIUM students preferred not to visit people infected with COVID-19 regardless of whether those people are their friends or relatives. Further, IIUM students tended to stay indoors to avoid COVID-19. The findings of the study are expected to have implications on online information sharing and virus outbreak.

ABSTRACT

A stable democracy reflects the active involvement of the people. There is, however, increasing concern about the decline of democratic participation, which draws on the ineffectiveness of practising democracy and widespread dissatisfaction. This article introduces the concept of crowdsourcing democracy to sustain democratic revitalization and discusses examples of crowdsourcing activities from many nations and across disciplines. This article deduces the value of the implementation of crowdsourcing in policymaking and encourages greater political engagement and participation, especially among young people. As of now, crowdsourcing is known to be cross-cutting, especially in business and media communication. It is beneficial to understand crowdsourcing democracy as a new open government paradigm to meet the high challenge of modern democracy, driven by the idea of crowdsourcing approaches from other disciplines. This article focused on four essential elements: (i) media, (ii) motivation, (iii) reward, and (iv) response as a significant contributor to democracy in crowdsourcing. This paper concludes a possible suggestion that looks at the position of democracy and open government by sequentially integrating and putting four critical factors in a conceptual context.

ABSTRACT

The primary objective of this study is to test the effect of music tempo (fast music tempo and slow music tempo) and musical composition (vocal and instrumental music) on customer behavioral responses namely beverage consumption, duration of stay, and money spent in a coffee house environment. Guided by Stimulus-Organism-Response (S-O-R) Model, a field experiment among 80 respondents involving four experimental conditions namely fast and non-instrumental music, slow and non-instrumental music, fast and instrumental music and slow and instrumental music conditions was conducted at one international coffee chain store in Malaysia. A factorial between-group analysis of variance (Two-Way ANOVA) was conducted and results showed that slow and instrumental music would generate greater beverage consumption among the respondents as compared to the fast and non-instrumental groups. As for the duration of stay, instrumental music was found to induce greater time spent in the coffeehouse more than it is in the non-instrumental condition. For the money spent on beverages at the coffee house, the result indicates that slow and instrumental music conditions would generate greater spending at the coffee house. The findings thus provide empirical evidence on the important use of slow and instrumental music to generate positive outcomes among the consumers in the coffee house setting.
